Action required in the event of pest infestation

In the event of a pest infestation or suspected pest infestation, food business must:

  • Contact a pest contractor immediately
  • Contact the local Environmental Health Officer
  • Wash, disinfect and dry any equipment, surfaces or utensils pests may have been in contact with
  • Dispose any food pests may have touched - if in doubt, throw it away
  • Identify the cause of the infestation and make sure it can't happen again
  • Repair any structural defects immediately
  • Ensure more frequent pest checks- at least every three months
  • Improve staff training. Make sure staff can spot the signs of pest activity. Instruct staff to report problems immediately

If premises are not well maintained, scrupulously clean, and free from pests, this will put off customers apart from making it impossible to provide food that it is safe to eat. Be extra vigilant at all times and any concerns must be notified to the Manager or Supervisor. Food premises can be closed down as a direct result of pest infestation and must never be ignored.
