Signs and Precautions
The presence of insects in food premises should not be taken for granted as these insects are capable of causing food poisoning. In some countries, insects are responsible for spreading several serious diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery as well as food poisoning.
Signs:
- Visible insects and birds in food premises
- Presence of moulted skins
- Presence of egg cases
- Presence of food debris and webbing on packages, shelving or food.
- Live or dead flies/insects/cockroaches/ants in food premises
- Unusual smell
- Damages to packaging
- Feathers
- Damage to food
Precautions:
- Fly screens/mesh on doors and windows of food rooms.
- Ultraviolet fly electrocuters.
- Sticky fly papers in store rooms (not near open food).
- Cover all food.
- Site dustbins away from windows and doors.
- Always cover bins with tight fitting lids and ensure regular emptying, cleaning and disinfection.
- Keep all food rooms clean.
- Clean up all spills.
- Store food in sealed containers.
- Keep rubbish and waste areas clean.
- Extra care is needed when recovering from an infestation as eggs may hatch at a later date.
- Report sightings to a Manager or Supervisor immediately.
- Mist nets may be erected in warehouses to catch and remove birds.
- Reject damaged food deliveries as they may be contaminated.
- Do not feed birds.
