Elimination of Shelter and Food
Cleanliness and proper storage of food will help to discourage rodents.
Rodents tend to live underground, beneath rubbish piles and stored materials, within double walls and in similar enclosed spaces.
Regular removal of rubbish will deprive rodents of shelter. Rubbish should be kept outside the building overnight in sealed bins.
Materials should be stored off the ground and away from walls, to facilitate Inspection.
Ensure storage and preparation areas are well lit. As rodents dislike light, dark areas should be kept to a minimum.
Rodent Proofing of Buildings
Buildings made of concrete and brick are least attractive to rodents.
Concrete foundations should extend at least 0.6m below ground and at least 0.45m above ground. Service entry and exit points must be adequately sealed. This includes water and sewage pipes, wiring and other lines.
Ventilation exits and entry points must be fitted with a screen with no openings larger than 6 mm. Doors and windows should fit tightly and bristle strips may be used.
