Electrocution
Insect electrocuters are now common. They are either suspended from the ceiling or fixed to the wall. The units emit ultra-violet rays and as the insects touch the grids, they are electrocuted and fall into collecting trays at the base of the units. The installation of electrocuters is not a replacement for good hygiene!
If electrocuters are used, they should be properly located in the area which is free from draughts and away from natural light. It should not be placed over food preparation areas where there may be a risk of dead insects falling from the unit. The ultra violet tubes within these units should be replaced at least once a year.
The following are requirements to insect electrocuters:
Elimination of Insects by Fumigation
Weevils and grain mites can be exterminated from grain silos and from stores by fumigation with, for example, formaldehyde. The use of chemicals in the treatment and elimination of pest infestation should only be carried out by a trained pest control technician.
