Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction to a specific food ingredient that can be life-threatening. It occurs because the body's immune system has overreacted to presence of an allergen. This type of allergic reaction is sometimes referred to as an anaphylactic shock.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis include mild or severe breathing difficulties, trouble swallowing and feeling faint. An anaphylaxis patient will require immediate medical treatment. Symptoms may develop suddenly after consuming the allergenic ingredients and can quickly deteriorate.

People who have diagnosed anaphylaxis are likely to carry an adrenaline auto-injector with them as an immediate treatment.
